Unpaid road toll text (smishing)
Last updated
Also known as: E-ZPass text scam, SunPass text, FasTrak toll text, TxTag toll scam
What it looks like
A text claiming you have an outstanding toll (often around $12) and warning of a late fee if you do not click a link to pay. The link impersonates a state toll service; phone numbers change by state.
Who it targets
Drivers in states with electronic tolling; the IC3 reported the scam moving state-to-state.
Red flags
- Unsolicited text about unpaid tolls with a payment link
- Urgent late-fee threat
- URL that only looks like the real toll agency
- Sender number changes or is not your known toll agency
What to do if you clicked, paid, or replied
- Do not click the link or reply
- Check your balance only on the official toll agency website or app you already trust
- Report the text and URL to IC3 at ic3.gov
- If you clicked or entered info, secure accounts and dispute unfamiliar charges
Still circulating?
Still widely reported in 2026 alongside other government-imposter toll texts (E-ZPass, SunPass, FasTrak, TxTag).
